Pale yellow, green hints, silver reflections. A multi-faceted bouquet, with floral nuances, subtle hints of passion fruit, papaya and lime zest. Juicy and elegant, notes of white peach, mineral, full of finesse with rich acidity and a lemony-salty finish. A lively style, that will benefit from further ageing and development.

From a site that is usually all about sleek elegance, this is remarkably substantial and richly textural on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Wonderful fine tannins, candied citrus fruit and complex dried flower character. Lovely fresh acidity for the hot and dry vintage at the long, delicately spicy finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

Schloss Gobelsburg is one of Austria’s great historic wine estates, with roots dating back to the 12th century when Cistercian monks first began cultivating vineyards around Kamptal. Today the estate is guided by Michael Moosbrugger, whose thoughtful and restrained winemaking has helped cement Schloss Gobelsburg as one of the world’s benchmark producers of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Heiligenstein is the jewel of the region, a dramatic sandstone and volcanic vineyard capable of producing Rieslings of extraordinary perfume, precision and longevity.
The 2022 vintage is stunningly pure and finely detailed. Aromas of lime zest, white peach and green apple rise from the glass alongside jasmine, wet stone and delicate smoky mineral notes. There is incredible energy through the palate, with razor sharp acidity wrapped around layers of citrus, stone fruit and flinty minerality. The texture feels both crystalline and quietly powerful, building slowly across the tongue before finishing long, dry and intensely saline with lingering notes of citrus oil and crushed rock.
This is Riesling built for serious food and patient drinking. Fresh oysters, kingfish sashimi or grilled lobster with lemon butter would all be sensational matches. It also shines beside spicy Thai dishes, pork schnitzel or delicate goat’s cheese dishes where the wine’s freshness cuts beautifully through richer flavours. Given time in the glass, more floral and mineral detail slowly emerges, revealing why Heiligenstein remains one of the world’s truly great Riesling vineyards.
