2022 Sinapius Close Planted Chardonnay, Northern Tasmania

Grown exclusively from our dry grown, high density planted blocks. With between 7,700 – 9,615 vines per hectare, and 9 different Chardonnay clones, we harvested less than 1kg per vine. The grapes were handpicked at 11.2 – 11.5° baumè, then pressed to tank without enzymes. Lightly settled overnight, then transferred to barrel retaining most of the solids. Wild yeast fermentation and maturation in 600 litre and 225 litre French oak barrels (15% new) for 12 months. 100% malolactic fermentation.

The wine was blended after 12 months on full lees and settled in tank for a further six months to allow for integration and natural clarification to avoid need for fining or filtration. Bottled in October 2023.

Nectarine and grapefruit pith, some lightly grilled nuts roll out as a first impression and confirmation the expression of nature through the vineyard has been shaped by deft hands. Then the intriguing undercurrents emerge. Aloe and oyster shell. This is a wine that’s been allowed to explore far horizons without ever losing sight of home.

It’s composed and finely balanced, fruit and acid in sync across the palate, drive and energy in abundance.
