2023 AttWoods Hommage Pinot Noir, Macedon Ranges

Attwoods Hommage Pinot Noir from the Macedon Ranges is a beautifully composed, cool-climate Pinot that pays tribute to both Burgundian finesse and the untamed elegance of high-altitude Victoria. Grown at altitude on volcanic soils in one of Australia’s coolest wine regions, this wine is made in small quantities with a focus on site, restraint and texture. It’s not about power, it’s about perfume, line and subtle depth.

Troy Attwood crafts this cuvée using traditional methods. Grapes are hand-picked and fermented with wild yeasts, often with a portion of whole bunch to bring aromatic lift and structure. Maturation takes place in French oak, mostly seasoned, for around 12 months. The resulting wine is expressive but finely balanced, offering purity rather than showiness.

Aromatically, it’s all red cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose, undergrowth and gentle spice. The palate is delicate and silken, with crunchy red fruits, savoury forest floor notes, fine tannins and bright natural acidity. There’s a quiet energy that drives the wine forward and a long, detailed finish that speaks of its high-altitude origins.

Food pairing: perfect with duck breast, mushroom and lentil cassoulet, thyme-roasted quail, or beetroot and goat cheese salad. Also excellent with soft rind cheeses or porcini pasta.

Cellar potential: drinking well now with a gentle decant, but will age gracefully for 8 to 12 years, developing more earthy and truffle-like complexity.
