Clos Rochette is a Faiveley Monopole of 5+ ha. Mid lemon and lime. The sulphur, recently added as it has just been prepared for bottling, knocks it back but the excellence of the wine is still clear, with a lime and grapefruit note offering a fresher aspect to the core of ripe white fruit. Drink from 2026-2028. Tasted Nov 2024.

Clos Rochette sits in the heart of Mercurey, where limestone and marl soils give Chardonnay both texture and a firm mineral line, and Faiveley brings a long family history and steady hand to the site. One of Burgundy’s great historic houses, now led by the seventh generation, they balance tradition with precision, and this wine shows just how good white Mercurey can be.
The 2023 vintage is bright and expressive. Aromatics open with white peach, pear and lemon zest, with a lift of grapefruit and a subtle floral note. There is a gentle savoury layer building underneath, almond, a touch of spice and a faint flinty edge that adds complexity.
On the palate it sits in the medium bodied range with a smooth, rounded texture, but there is a clear line of acidity that keeps everything in check. Stone fruit and citrus carry through cleanly, supported by restrained oak that adds shape rather than weight. The finish is fresh and mineral, with a lightly savoury edge that lingers.
Faiveley’s winemaking is all about balance, careful élevage and thoughtful oak use, allowing the vineyard character to come through while keeping the wine accessible.
This is a versatile match at the table. Grilled prawns with garlic and lemon work beautifully, as do scallops, roast chicken or a simple fish dish with herbs. It also pairs well with dishes like crab risotto, zucchini fritters or a savoury tart with herbs and cheese, where the wine’s freshness and texture bring everything together.
Drinking beautifully now for its brightness and charm, it will continue to evolve over the next five to eight years, picking up more nutty complexity while holding its balance.
