2023 Howard Park Blackwood Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Margaret River

There’s a bit happening here. It’s no ordinary savvy. I like the restraint and poise in this wine. Sourced from Nannup, it has a minerally citrus tang to it. Has good weight and texture with top note aromatics. Fermented 50% in oak and the rest in tank. It largely goes into puncheons with a portion of Hungarian oak adding spice. Appealing bell pepper character.

Howard Park’s Blackwood Valley Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshingly crisp take on this ever-popular varietal, offering something a little different from its more tropical Margaret River counterparts. While the winery is best known for its Margaret River and Great Southern wines, this expression draws from the cool-climate Blackwood Valley, bringing a racier, more mineral edge to the style.

Winemaker Nic Bowen, known for his detail-oriented, terroir-focused approach, works with pristine fruit from higher-altitude sites in the Blackwood region. The cool conditions here help preserve vibrant acidity while allowing the fruit to slowly develop purity and precision. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to lock in freshness, with a short time on lees to add texture without weighing it down.

Aromatics are punchy and clean with notes of lime zest, fresh-cut grass, green melon and a subtle hint of nettle. On the palate it’s bright and zippy with citrus and green apple leading the way, followed by a chalky, mineral-like finish. There’s a clarity and restraint that makes it feel super precise yet effortlessly drinkable.
