Dense and well-built, showing sour cherries, forest berries, cocoa, leather and warm spices. Medium-bodied, driven and serious with plenty of focus, volume and texture alongside fine tannins. Long, lively finish. Drink or hold.

93 points Kevin Dacy for James Suckling, October 2025

From the slightly cooler vintage, the 2023 Super Nanny opens with lifted aromatics of red berries, bilberries and plums, dusted with rose petals, cocoa, cinnamon and subtle earthy notes. It is medium bodied, with deep layers of fruit flavoured with savoury mushroom notes and a textural chewiness on a long palate.

Cocoa, leather and warm spice give this one real depth, so it wants something rich enough to stand up to it without fighting the fine tannins. A braised oxtail ragu with pappardelle, or a Moroccan lamb tagine with dates and preserved lemon are both great options.

More about this wine

The 2023 season might have been a disaster for parts of the North Island, but Central Otago enjoyed an even if somewhat cooler than average season that provided well-balanced and aromatic fruit of high quality.

This vintage of the Super Nanny is a blend of 42% Bendigo, 44% Pisa and 14% Queensberry fruit. The fruit was destemmed, retaining a high proportion of whole berries with 14% kept as whole bunches. A short maceration period was followed by a natural ferment that was left on skins for 30-32 days before pressing. The wine was pressed and racked into French oak barriques of which 19% were new, with natural malolactic and maturation totalling fourteen months.

About Nanny Goat

Nanny Goat Vineyard is named after the wild goats that roam the mountainous terrain of
Central Otago.

The home vineyard in Queensberry sits between 270m and 290m altitude about halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka. Its 18.7 hectares of vines are spread across two northeasterly terraces along the Mata Au/Clutha River of alluvial soils that are a tapestry of loess, gravel, schist and mineral quartz. Planted from 2004, the vineyard is certified organic.

A second vineyard is located in the Bendigo subregion and sits on the other side of the river and overlooks Queensberry. Its 13.7 hectares of vines are planted mostly to Pinot Noir, with small blocks of Syrah. This site is farmed with conventional methods while incorporating regenerative practices. Fruit is also sourced from neighbouring farms that share similar philosophy to viticultural sustainability.

All fruit is handpicked and hand sorted at the winery, retaining as many whole berries as possible. Whole bunch components are considered essential for fermentation that takes place in open top stainless steel. The Pinot Noir wines mature 11-13 months in 225-litre French oak barriques of which 35-40% are renewed annually, while the Chardonnays spend roughly nine months in 500-litre French oak puncheons.
