2023 Thompson Estate Chardonnay, Margaret River

A bit of colour, albeit a bright straw gold. A very good drink as it’s a more pared-back style this vintage. Citrus and stone fruit, a little flinty, even some chicken stock complexity coming via lees. Superfine acidity throughout, and cedary oak – not much, just enough to fill out the palate slightly. Quite delicious.

Crafted with a focus on precision and elegance, Thompson Estate’s Chardonnay reflects the cool maritime climate, ancient gravelly soils, and meticulous viticulture that make Margaret River one of Australia’s premier Chardonnay regions.

Founded by cardiologist Dr Peter Thompson and his wife Jane, Thompson Estate is located in the prized Wilyabrup subregion, surrounded by some of the region’s most famous vineyards. The estate vineyards are sustainably farmed, with a strong emphasis on maintaining soil health and vineyard balance to ensure fruit purity and regional expression.

The fruit for this Chardonnay is handpicked in the cool of early morning, whole bunch pressed, and fermented in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels. Wild fermentation is encouraged to bring complexity and texture, with a portion of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation to add richness while preserving a fine acid backbone. Lees stirring during maturation adds creamy depth and savoury layers.

In the glass, Thompson Estate Chardonnay opens with aromas of white peach, lemon curd, brioche, and a hint of struck flint. The palate is vibrant and textured, offering layers of stone fruit, citrus, roasted nuts, and a precise mineral finish. It shows wonderful tension and drive, balancing generosity with a refreshing, coastal energy that is a hallmark of great Margaret River Chardonnay.

Perfect with roast chicken, grilled lobster, or creamy risotto, Thompson Estate Chardonnay is a refined yet generous white that will develop beautifully over the next five to eight years.
