The 2023 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #10 is very clear, fresh and precise on the spring-like nose. Flavors of crushed rocks, salts and lime zest drag into the glass, and the wine, once on the palate, is full of energy and very fine raisin, even blueberry and wax leaf aromas. This beautifully balanced and silky Domprobst Spätlese is full of finesse and reveals a playful, irresistible character with perfectly ripe fruit that is like an idea of fruit rather than material on the palate. This is a subtle stunner and one day will probably be even finer than the gorgeous Himmelreich Spätlese. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024.

The 2023er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #10 (the reference to #10 is written in small on the bottom right of the label) is a sweet wine made from harvested mainly in the Fergert. The nose proves quite appealing and refreshing as delicate scents of candied citrusy fruits and fresh mint, anise, tangerine, thyme, and candy floss. The wine is very playful and juicy on the palate, where some ripe yellow fruits give a creamy and delicately smooth side to the whole. The finish is very long and precise, as some zesty elements give freshness and purity. This is a drinking Spätlese, with depth and complexity. 2031-2053

Graacher Domprobst is one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyards, a steep, perfectly exposed slope of blue Devonian slate that consistently delivers Rieslings of depth and finesse. At Willi Schaefer, this site is handled with extraordinary care, meticulous selection in the vineyard, low yields and a deeply traditional approach in the cellar. Christoph Schaefer continues the family legacy, crafting wines that are all about purity, balance and a true reflection of place. The #10 AP selection highlights a specific parcel, often showing a slightly different expression of ripeness and structure within the Spätlese range.
The 2023 vintage shows a beautiful interplay between richness and precision. Aromatics are layered and expressive, ripe peach, apricot and mandarin, with a lift of lime zest that keeps everything fresh. There is a delicate floral note, honeysuckle and white blossom, alongside a pronounced slate driven minerality that adds depth. A gentle touch of honey and spice begins to emerge as it opens.
On the palate it carries more breadth than the lighter Spätlese lots, but still with that signature Mosel lift. Medium bodied with a silky texture, the fruit is generous yet finely controlled, stone fruit and citrus unfolding across the palate. Vibrant acidity provides structure and energy, keeping the wine poised and balanced. The finish is long and detailed, with layers of mineral, citrus and a softly lingering sweetness.
Winemaking remains entirely traditional, hand picked fruit, spontaneous fermentation and slow development allowing the wine to find its natural equilibrium. The result is a Riesling that feels both expressive and precise, with a sense of effortless balance.
This is a natural partner for dishes with a touch of richness or spice. Duck, pork, lightly spiced Asian cuisine or even richer seafood all work beautifully, and it also stands comfortably on its own.
It has excellent ageing potential. Fifteen to twenty five years will see it evolve into more complex territory, with notes of honey, dried fruit, spice and deeper mineral character emerging while retaining its freshness.
