The 2024 Pommard Village comes from two lieux-dits on the slope. It has a lifted nose of raspberry and blackberry fruit, with just a pinch of brown spices. Fine definition considering that this is a village cru. The palate is very well balanced, elegant and poised, with a fine backbone of tannins, almost flinty in style but just needs a touch more persistence. An assured Pommard that brims with freshness, one to drink over the next 8-10 years.

89-91 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet have turned Bachelet-Monnot into one of the Côte de Beaune’s most sought-after domaines. Based in Dezize-lès-Maranges, they work vineyards from Maranges through to Puligny-Montrachet, with meticulous farming and a beautifully restrained hand in the cellar. Their Pommard captures the village’s naturally muscular personality but gives it the brothers’ trademark lift and finesse — Pommard without the hobnail boots.

The 2024 vintage was a demanding one in Burgundy, with a cool, wet growing season and painfully small yields requiring relentless work in the vineyard. Careful growers were rewarded with fragrant, finely shaped wines rather than blockbusters. Pommard’s iron-rich clay and limestone soils bring darker fruit and structure, while Bachelet-Monnot’s approach keeps the wine energetic and transparent.

Bright ruby with a deeper crimson core, the nose opens with Morello cherry, wild raspberry and red plum before violet, dried thyme and a little blood orange emerge. With air come black tea, forest floor, clove and an earthy mineral note. The palate has lovely tension, with juicy red and dark fruit framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Cherry skin, herbs and gentle spice build through the middle before a long, savoury finish of tea leaf, earth and stone.

This wants duck breast with cherries, pork tenderloin with porcini, roast quail with lentils, beef bourguignon or a mushroom and Comté tart. Our pick is the pork and porcini, caramelised meat, earthy mushrooms and glossy pan juices against Pommard’s cherry and savoury structure is Burgundy doing what Burgundy does rather unfairly well.

Cellaring: Drink from 2027 to 2038.
