2024 Domaine Rossignol-Février Carelle Sous la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru, Burgundy

The 2024 Volnay Carelle Sous La Chapelle 1er Cru has quite a floral bouquet with rose petal-infused raspberry and strawberry fruit, just a touch of orange sorbet emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, a bit of dryness on the mid-palate here and it feels austere on the finish if I recall the previous vintage. I just hope that this does not dry out; as such, I would broach this earlier than recent vintages.  Drink: 2027 - 2036

Domaine Rossignol-Février is a family estate rooted in Volnay, one of Burgundy's most celebrated villages for elegant Pinot Noir. The domaine's wines reflect the fragrant, finely structured character of the Côte de Beaune, with an emphasis on purity of fruit and individual vineyard expression. Carelle Sous la Chapelle is a Premier Cru that captures Volnay's delicate perfume while adding the concentration and depth expected from a distinguished vineyard.

The Carelle Sous la Chapelle vineyard lies on the slopes of Volnay, where limestone and clay soils provide an excellent setting for Pinot Noir. The 2024 vintage favoured freshness and aromatic detail, producing a wine with lovely tension, fine tannins and the potential to develop beautifully over time.

Bright ruby red with delicate garnet reflections. Wild cherry, raspberry and red plum mingle with rose petals, violet and a hint of sweet spice. The palate is silky yet beautifully structured, with concentrated red berries, lively acidity and finely woven tannins. Subtle notes of forest floor, dried herbs and earthy spice carry through a long, fragrant finish.

Try it with roasted duck and sour cherries, wild mushroom and chestnut tart, or pan fried quail with lentils and thyme. Its elegant structure also makes it a wonderful partner for beetroot ravioli with sage butter.

Cellaring: Drink 2028 to 2038. A few years in the cellar should reveal greater savoury complexity and beautifully softened tannins.
