2024 Harewood Estate Chardonnay, Great Southern

This is a fine Chardonnay from the Denmark sub-region of the Great Southern in Western Australia. Fermentation was in French oak barrels. A gleaming yellow hue, there are aromas of cashews, stone fruits, florals, nectarines and dry herbs. The wine has good intensity, a supple and slightly creamy texture, with focus and balance, and is of medium length. Enjoyable now it will continue to drink well for the next five to six years. Drink to 2031.

Light straw yellow colour. Pineapple, feijoa and crushed chalk aromas. Fruit is bright and fresh, tropical notes with green melon and citrus lift. Good length, acidity works well without overbearing and ensures a clean finish. Drink to 2031.

This wine was made from grapes grown in the cool maritime climate of Denmark, the southern coastal reach of the the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia.

The juice was barrel fermented in a mixture of new and second use French oak barriques and puncheons. Half of the barrels were lees stirred weekly and allowed to undergo secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine matured for nine months in the barrels before blending, minimal fining and bottling.

Winemaker James Kellie’s years as a contract winemaker for growers across the Great Southern region gave him unique insights into its diversity and potential. His love for the region led him to purchase a former client, Harewood Estate, in 2003 with his wife Careena. This commitment came with building a winery from scratch and a clear ambition: to make wines that reflect the full breadth of the Great Southern rather than a single corner of it.
