2024 Hentley Farm The Stray Grenache Shiraz, Barossa Valley

Bright magenta-splashed crimson with aromas of satsuma plum, red/black cherries and boysenberry fruits, hints of fine spice, citrus blossom, dried meats, fresh and pressed wildflowers, crushed minerals and earth. These aromas transpose neatly over to the palate, which shows plenty of energy, bright saline acidity and some bright, pure fruit on the exit. Drink to 2036.

Full ruby red with purple at the edge. Mulberry, dark chocolate and black pepper aromas. Full bodied and richly layered with dark berries, mocha and black spices. Sandy tannins keep it flowing. Very good length, finishing dry with a slight warmth. Drink to 2034.

This vintage of The Stray is a 60/38/2 blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Zinfandel (aka Primitivo). The fruit was estate grown in the Seppeltsfield vineyard and de-stemmed prior to fermentation. The varieties were vinified and matured separately, with 2/3 of the final blend ending up with 60 days of maceration on skins. The wine was then matured in seasoned oak barrels for nine months ahead of blending and bottling.

Hentley Farm was established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Hentschke in the rolling hills of Greenock Creek in the western reaches of the Barossa. Their 150-hectare property sits on a diverse range of soils that coupled with the varying orientations of the land gives them a rich tapestry of fruit styles from their two vineyard sites. Work at the winery has been led by winemaker Andrew Quin since 2008.
