The fruit for Meadowbank’s lithe, detailed Pinot is drawn from a north-facing parcel of vines planted by Gerald Ellis in 1987 (which winemaker Peter Dredge thinks is probably a combination of clones MV6 and D5V12). The slopes descend over Meadowbank's typical loose sand and sandstone over dark brown coffee rock (sand cemented by iron oxides and organic matter), and these vines benefit from lovely exposure and airflow.
Meadowbank Pinot Noir from the Derwent Valley is one of Tasmania’s most expressive and finely tuned examples of the variety. Grown on the Meadowbank estate’s sustainably managed vineyard, nestled in the windswept hills of southern Tasmania, this Pinot reflects the unique interplay of cold nights, sandstone soils and a long growing season that allows the fruit to develop intense flavour while retaining purity and elegance.
Winemaker Peter Dredge brings a gentle, intuitive approach to crafting this wine. The fruit is hand harvested, with a mix of whole bunch and destemmed ferments to create both aromatic lift and structural depth. Fermentation is spontaneous, and maturation takes place in older French oak, preserving brightness and freshness while allowing the vineyard’s personality to shine through.
The nose is vivid with wild strawberries, raspberry leaf, red cherry and rose petal, layered with savoury notes of forest floor, spice and subtle stalky lift from whole bunch inclusion. The palate is silky and energetic, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral finish that lingers with red fruit and earthy complexity.
Perfect with roast duck and cherry jus, pan-seared salmon, lentil and mushroom ragù or beetroot and goat cheese tart. It also sings with truffle-infused dishes or a classic washed rind cheese. Drink now for its vibrant charm or cellar for 5 to 7 years to see its savoury, autumnal side unfold.
