Poppies Pinot Gris from Martinborough is a beautifully balanced, textural white wine that reflects the elegance and hands-on craftsmanship of Poppy and Shayne Hammond’s boutique estate. Grown on their estate vineyard and made in very limited volumes, this Pinot Gris is a true expression of Martinborough’s cool climate and the Hammonds’ gentle winemaking philosophy.
Fruit is handpicked at optimal ripeness, then whole-bunch pressed to preserve purity and finesse. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel and sometimes a small portion in neutral oak, depending on the vintage, to build texture and complexity. A period of lees contact adds creaminess without compromising freshness.
In the glass, it’s delicately aromatic, with notes of pear, apple blossom, honeysuckle and a touch of baking spice. The palate is dry and elegant, with layers of white peach, nashi pear and lemon peel supported by gentle acidity and a lovely mineral finish. This is a Pinot Gris that treads the line between freshness and generosity with real poise.
Perfect with grilled scallops, Vietnamese spring rolls, fennel salad or creamy chicken dishes. Beautiful now and will hold well for a few years in bottle.
