This surely must be one of the best value chardonnays of the region. The fruit is sourced from estate vineyards, and wild-yeast fermentation occurs in French oak, where it ages for nine months. Underripe white stone fruit, with apricot, grapefruit pith and lemon zest. It marches ahead on the palate, its threads of acidity carrying the weight of toasted almond, cashew, and Greek yoghurt. You'd be hard pressed to refuse a glass of this. Particularly at the price.

High in the cool folds of the Adelaide Hills, Sidewood Estate has built a strong reputation for Chardonnay that balances purity with quiet confidence. Founded by Owen Inglis and now guided by winemaker Dylan Lee, the estate focuses on site expression, drawing fruit from elevated vineyards where long, cool ripening seasons preserve natural acidity and detail.
The Adelaide Hills remains one of Australia’s most exciting regions for Chardonnay, thanks to its altitude and varied aspects. Warm days build flavour, while crisp nights lock in freshness, creating wines that sit comfortably between generosity and precision.
Pale straw with a flicker of green, the aromatics are clean and inviting. White peach, nectarine and citrus peel lead, followed by subtle notes of cashew, struck flint and a gentle touch of oak spice. There is a nice balance between fruit and savoury complexity, nothing overplayed.
The palate is finely tuned, stone fruit and citrus layered over a creamy yet restrained texture. Lees work adds a soft roundness, while a line of bright acidity keeps everything focused and fresh. Oak is well integrated, offering a hint of toast and spice without dominating. It finishes long and balanced, with a lingering mineral edge that reflects the cool climate origins.
A great match for dishes that play with both richness and freshness. Grilled chicken with lemon and herbs, pan seared scallops, or a pork dish with apple and fennel all work beautifully. It also handles lighter spice well, making it a versatile option across a range of cuisines.
Drinking beautifully now, though it will develop further complexity over five to eight years.
There is an easy confidence here, a Chardonnay that delivers detail and drinkability in equal measure, perfectly suited to a relaxed long lunch or a well set table with good company.
