Stefano Lubiana has long been one of Tasmania’s leading names in biodynamic viticulture, crafting wines that capture the purity and elegance of their Derwent Valley estate. The Pinot Gris is a wonderful showcase of that philosophy, offering more depth and texture than most Australian examples of the variety.
The vineyard site sits on north-facing slopes overlooking the Derwent River, where the cool Tasmanian climate combines with biodynamic farming to produce grapes of superb concentration and energy. The Lubiana family converted to biodynamics in 2010, and their wines now hum with a vitality that reflects both the soils and the seasons.
In the glass, the Pinot Gris is expressive and layered. Aromas of pear, quince and white nectarine mingle with delicate floral hints and a touch of spice. The palate is textural and mouthfilling, carrying flavours of orchard fruit, almond meal and subtle honeyed notes balanced by fine acidity. It is a wine that bridges richness and freshness, making it equally at home as a food wine or a contemplative glass on its own.
This style pairs beautifully with dishes like grilled scallops with lemon butter, roast chicken with thyme, or even a creamy mushroom risotto. Its texture means it also works with mildly spiced Asian dishes or chargrilled vegetables. While already expressive in youth, it has the structure to develop greater complexity over the next 5 to 8 years.
