The 2024 Marsanne leads with white chocolate, star anise, fennel, pineapple lumps and white flowers. It's ultra pretty and engaging its purity and distinction. The wine has so much personality, and it might be the birdsong wafting in through the open window as I type, but the wine has dappled detail and harmony that is most pleasing. A delight.

93 points, Erin Larkin The Wine Advocate

100% Marsanne from the Descendant Vineyard in Marananga, planted 1994. The lead up to the 2024 harvest saw timely spring rainfall and calm conditions for flowering and fruit set. A mild to warm summer contributed to even growth and fruit development.

Torbreck built its name on Rhône varieties in the Barossa, and while Shiraz often takes the spotlight, their Marsanne shows a more quietly compelling side of the region. With roots in old vine material and a philosophy shaped by traditional Rhône styles, the focus here is on texture, balance and longevity rather than overt fruit.

Sourced from carefully selected Barossa sites, the wine opens with subtle aromatics, pear, quince and a gentle citrus note, alongside a faint floral lift. There is an underlying savoury tone too, hints of almond, beeswax and a touch of spice that add complexity without weight.

The palate is where Marsanne really comes into its own. Medium bodied with a rounded, almost waxy texture, it carries orchard fruit flavours through a soft, layered structure. Acidity is present but gentle, giving just enough lift to keep things fresh, while the finish lingers with a lightly nutty, savoury edge.

Winemaking is handled with restraint, allowing the variety’s natural texture and character to shine. Oak, if used, sits quietly in the background, more about adding shape than flavour.

This is a wine that comes alive with food. Roast chicken, pork with apple, or richer seafood dishes all work beautifully. It also pairs well with dishes that have a bit of spice or texture, where the wine’s weight can match the flavours.

Marsanne is known for its ability to age, and this is no exception. While approachable now, five to ten years in the cellar will see it evolve into more complex territory, honey, toasted nuts and a deeper savoury character.
