Coriole has long been one of McLaren Vale’s quiet innovators, a family estate founded by Hugh and Molly Lloyd in 1967 and still very much in family hands today, with Mark Lloyd guiding the winemaking. While many know them for Sangiovese, Coriole has always had a knack for exploring Mediterranean varieties that suit the Vale’s warm, coastal climate, and Nero d’Avola fits like a glove.
Originally from Sicily, Nero d’Avola thrives in sunshine, and McLaren Vale’s mix of heat, sea breezes and varied soils allows it to ripen fully while retaining enough freshness to keep things lively. Coriole’s approach keeps the style medium bodied and vibrant rather than overly heavy, letting the variety’s natural charm shine.
Deep ruby in colour, the aromatics are generous but not overblown. Dark cherry, plum and blackberry lead, followed by hints of dried herbs, spice and a subtle savoury note that gives it a slightly wild edge. There is a gentle warmth, but it never feels jammy.
The palate is juicy and energetic, with dark fruit at its core supported by fine, lightly grippy tannins. A thread of acidity keeps everything fresh, while notes of spice, earth and a touch of liquorice build through the finish. It sits in that sweet spot between richness and drinkability, making it very easy to come back for another glass.
This is a natural fit for flavour driven, relaxed food. Chargrilled lamb, wood fired pizza, or eggplant with tomato and herbs all work beautifully. It also handles spice well, pairing nicely with dishes that carry a bit of warmth without overwhelming heat.
Best enjoyed over the next five to eight years while that balance of fruit and savoury detail is at its peak.
There is a laid back confidence here, a wine that feels right at home with good food, good company and a table that doesn’t need to be too formal.
