Corzano e Paterno sits in the beautiful hills of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, south of Florence, where vineyards share the property with olive groves and the sheep responsible for the estate’s excellent cheeses. Swiss architect Wendelin Gelpke began restoring the old farm in the late 1960s, and today his family continues the project with a wonderfully unforced approach to Tuscan farming. Il Corzanello Rosso is the cheerful, youthful end of the wine range, organically grown and made for the table rather than the trophy cabinet.
Sangiovese provides the Tuscan heartbeat, with the estate’s elevated vineyards and calcareous soils helping preserve freshness through the warm growing season. The 2025 is all about juicy fruit, perfume and immediate pleasure, with little interest in heavy extraction or excessive oak. There is enough tannin and savoury bite to remind you it is properly Tuscan, but this is a bottle to open rather than contemplate.
Bright ruby red, bursting with sour cherry, raspberry and red plum, followed by violet and blood orange. Fennel seed, sage and a little black tea give the fruit a savoury edge. The palate is light to medium bodied and wonderfully juicy, with cherry and raspberry carried by lively acidity and fine, easygoing tannins. Orange peel and dried herbs give the fresh finish a gently earthy twist.
A mushroom and pecorino pizza with crisp, blistered edges is exactly the mood here. Pasta with tomato and eggplant, grilled pork and fennel sausages, white beans with sage or zucchini parmigiana will also keep the bottle moving quickly.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2030.
